Psalm 120
A Song of ascents.

¹ I call on the LORD in my distress, and he answers me.
² Save me, O LORD, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues.
³ What will he do to you, and what more besides, O deceitful tongue?
⁴ He will punish you with a warrior’s sharp arrows, with burning coals of the broom tree.
⁵ Woe to me that I dwell in Meshech, that I live among the tents of Kedar!
⁶ Too long have I lived among those who hate peace.
⁷ I am a man of peace; but when I speak, they are for war.

This is the 1st of the fifteen Song of Ascents psalms. This psalm can have a special meaning to those individuals who have faced a time in their life where the lies and deceitful actions of others has caused and created destructive circumstances in their life. In verses one and two the psalmist calls to the Lord in his distress with the request to deliver him from lying lips and deceitful tongues. One of the pitfalls I now realized in dealing with people who use deceptive practices is the idea that the truth will prevail. Verse two describes these people as having lying lips and a deceitful tongue. These people use the same methods as Satan practices. Paul states this same type of description of the false prophets in the early church found in II Corinthians 11:13-15 “For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ. And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.”. The pitfall that we face is that we expect that truth will prevail over deceitful tongues and lying lips almost immediately. That is not the case. If this is true, then the real question we must face is how do we deal with people in our life you use lies and deceitful actions to get their way. The answer is not easy.

One of the issues I discovered is that people who used deceptive ways are cunnings. Psalm 64 describes their ways as a perfectly devised plan. So be careful in dealing with people in your life those that use lies and deceitful actions to get their way. It is better to turn the issue over to the Lord then to handle it yourself. This is the action that the psalmist is describing here in verse three when he states, “What will he (the Lord) do to you and what more besides”. Leaving judgment in God’s hands may seem impossible at the time, however, this is the action that David practiced in dealing with people who use lies and deceitful actions to get their ways.

One of the timeless truths that comes from this psalm is the wonder of God’s grace in our life. By waiting on God to take action we will not only see righteousness prevail, but we can also experience the peace that his grace affords use. The words of the song He Giveth More Grace by Annie J. Flint described to us how boundless his grace ready can be.

1. He giveth more grace as our burdens grow greater,
   He sendeth more strength as our labors increase;
   To added afflictions He addeth His mercy,
   To multiplied trials He multiplies peace.
2. When we have exhausted our store of endurance,
   When our strength has failed ere the day is half done,
   When we reach the end of our hoarded resources
   Our Father’s full giving is only begun.
3. Fear not that thy need shall exceed His provision,
   Our God ever yearns His resources to share;
   Lean hard on the arm everlasting, availing;
   The Father both thee and thy load will upbear.
4. His love has no limits, His grace has no measure,
   His power no boundary known unto men;
   For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
   He giveth, and giveth, and giveth again

So, wait on the Lord and watch his grace grow in your life which will give you a much richer life.

The Word of the Lord

⁹ How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to thy word.

¹¹ I have laid up thy word in my heart, that I might not sin against thee.

¹⁶ I will delight in thy statutes; I will not forget thy word.

¹⁷ Deal bountifully with thy servant, that I may live and observe thy word.

²⁵ My soul cleaves to the dust; revive me according to thy word!

²⁸ My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to thy word!

⁴² then shall I have an answer for those who taunt me, for I trust in thy word.

⁵⁷ The LORD is my portion; I promise to keep thy words.

⁶⁵ Thou hast dealt well with thy servant, O LORD, according to thy word.

⁶⁷ Before I was afflicted I went astray; but now I keep thy word.

⁷⁴ Those who fear thee shall see me and rejoice, because I have hoped in thy word.

⁸¹ My soul languishes for thy salvation; I hope in thy word.

⁸⁹ For ever, O LORD, thy word is firmly fixed in the heavens.

¹⁰¹ I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep thy word.

¹⁰⁵ Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

¹⁰⁷ I am sorely afflicted; give me life, O LORD, according to thy word!

¹¹⁴ Thou art my hiding place and my shield; I hope in thy word.

¹³⁰ The unfolding of thy words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.

¹³⁹ My zeal consumes me, because my foes forget thy words.

¹⁴⁷ I rise before dawn and cry for help; I hope in thy words.

¹⁶⁰ The sum of thy word is truth; and every one of thy righteous ordinances endures for ever.

¹⁶¹ Princes persecute me without cause, but my heart stands in awe of thy words.

¹⁶² I rejoice at thy word like one who finds great spoil.

¹⁶⁹ Let my cry come before thee, O LORD; give me understanding according to thy word!

¹⁷⁰ Let my supplication come before thee; deliver me according to thy word.

¹⁷² My tongue will sing of thy word, for all thy commandments are right.

Ways of the Lord

³ who also do no wrong, but walk in his ways!

⁵ O that my ways may be steadfast in keeping thy statutes!

The ordinances of the Lord

⁷ I will praise thee with an upright heart, when I learn thy righteous ordinances.

¹³ With my lips I declare all the ordinances of thy mouth.

²⁰ My soul is consumed with longing for thy ordinances at all times.

³⁰ I have chosen the way of faithfulness, I set thy ordinances before me.

³⁹ Turn away the reproach which I dread; for thy ordinances are good.

⁴³ And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth, for my hope is in thy ordinances.

⁵² When I think of thy ordinances from of old, I take comfort, O LORD.

⁶² At midnight I rise to praise thee, because of thy righteous ordinances.

¹⁰² I do not turn aside from thy ordinances, for thou hast taught me.

¹⁰⁶ I have sworn an oath and confirmed it, to observe thy righteous ordinances.

¹⁰⁸ Accept my offerings of praise, O LORD, and teach me thy ordinances.

¹⁶⁰ The sum of thy word is truth; and every one of thy righteous ordinances endures for

The Commandments of the Lord

⁶ Then I shall not be put to shame, having my eyes fixed on all thycommandments.

¹⁰ With my whole heart I seek thee; let me not wander from thycommandments!

¹⁹ I am a sojourner on earth; hide not thycommandments from me!

²¹Thou dost rebuke the insolent, accursed ones, who wander from thy commandments;

³²I will run in the way of thycommandments when thou enlargest my understanding!

³⁵ Lead me in the path of thycommandments, for I delight in it.

⁴⁷ for I find my delight in thycommandments, which I love.

⁴⁸I revere thycommandments, which I love, and I will meditate on thy statutes.

⁶⁰ I hasten and do not delay to keep thycommandments.

⁶⁶ Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in thy commandments.

⁷³Thy hands have made and fashioned me; give me understanding that I may learn thycommandments.

⁸⁶ All thycommandments are sure; they persecute me with falsehood; help me!

⁹⁶ I have seen a limit to all perfection, but thy commandment is exceedingly broad.

Testimonies of the Lord

² Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with their whole heart,

¹⁴ In the way of thy testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.

²² take away from me their scorn and contempt, for I have kept thy testimonies.

²⁴ Thy testimonies are my delight, they are my counselors.

³¹ I cleave to thy testimonies, O LORD; let me not be put to shame!

³⁶ Incline my heart to thy testimonies, and not to gain!

⁴⁶ I will also speak of thy testimonies before kings, and shall not be put to shame;

Precepts of the Lord

⁴ Thou hast commanded thy precepts to be kept diligently.

¹⁵ I will meditate on thy precepts and fix my eyes on thy ways.

²⁷ Make me understand the way of thy precepts, and I will meditate on thy wondrous works.

⁴⁰ Behold, I long for thy precepts; in thy righteousness give me life!

⁴⁵ and I shall walk at liberty, for I have sought thy precepts.

⁵⁶ This blessing has fallen to me, that I have kept thy precepts.

⁶³ I am a companion of all who fear thee, of those who keep thy precepts.

⁶⁹ The godless besmear me with lies, but with my whole heart I keep thy precepts;

⁷⁸ Let the godless be put to shame, because they have subverted me with guile; as for me, I will meditate on thy precepts.

⁸⁷ They have almost made an end of me on earth; but I have not forsaken thy precepts.

⁹³ I will never forget thy precepts; for by them thou hast given me life.

⁹⁴ I am thine, save me; for I have sought thy precepts.

¹⁰⁴ Through thy precepts I get understanding; therefore, I hate every false way.

Law of the Lord

Psalm 119 is simple a poem about the law, testimonies, ways, precepts, statues, commandments, ordinances, word, judgements, and promises of the Lord. As one slowly reads these words we are reminded how important it is to stay in God’s Word.

THE STONE THE BUILDERS REJECTED HAS BECOME THE CAPSTONE is also found in Matthew 21:42, Mark 12:10, Luke 20:17, Acts 4:11, Ephesians 2:20 and 1 Peter 2:7. In Matthew 21:42 Christ used it to sum up the parable of the wicked tenants. “Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in the Scriptures: ” ‘The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes’? “Therefore, I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. He who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed”.

As I study the scriptures I realize that without Jesus there is no need for the Bible. Jesus is the story of redemption that is proclaimed throughout the entire Bible. If your foundation of understanding the Bible is not built on the cornerstone of Jesus then you foundation will be unstable. Christian organization therefore must bases it foundation on Christ.

The first and last verses of this psalm “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever” is a testimony of one that has walked in the way of the Lord for a long period of time. It is easy to talk to other Christians about the Bible and the blessings as well as the tribulations we seem to face on our daily journey in life. However, our conversations with those that have not witness the love of Christ in their life seem to be short-lived. This is why it is so important to be a light that points others to Christ, by our actions. Our actions and life style can often lead an individual to Christ, where our preaching to them will usually turn them away.
