Psalm 19

Psalm 19

of David.
1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.
3 There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.
4 Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,

5 which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion, like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
6 It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is hidden from its heat.
7 The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul.
The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
8 The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
9 The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous.
10 They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb.
11 By them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward.
12 Who can discern his errors? Forgive my hidden faults.
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will I be blameless, innocent of great transgression.
14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

This psalm gives to us the ways that we can know God. First there is nature (natural Revelation) that declares God to us. The heavens declare his glory, the skies proclaim his work, night after night they display knowledge and by this knowledge, we can know God in an impersonal way. However, just observing the world around us scream that there must be a creator, one vastly greater than men. But we also have his written Word (law, statutes, precepts, commands, and ordinances) which to the seeker of God is more precious than gold and sweeter than honey. As I study this psalm, I realized the importance of staying in God’s word daily. His word revives my soul, it gives me wisdom, it gives me a joy and peace beyond understanding, and gives me light and direction for my daily life. By keeping them and meditating on them one can keep himself blameless, and innocent of great transgression. Yes, as we continue our journey in this life we will sometime slip and fall as we follow Christ, but as long as we stay in his word, we will not commit great transgressions.

The law of the Lord is simply walking blameless in His way. We must remember that the first four commandments of the ten commandments was our relationship with Him. You should have no other gods before me, you shall not make yourself an idol, you shall not use the Lord’s name in vain, remember the sabbath day to keep it holy. After that comes: honor your parents, do not commit murder, do not commit adultery, not do steal, do not bear false witness, and do not covet. Here is how David described how to walk in the law of the Lord from Psalm 119.

Law of the Lord

1 Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the LORD!

18 Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.

29 Put false ways far from me; and graciously teach me thy law!

34 Give me understanding, that I may keep thy law and observe it with my whole heart.

44 I will keep thy law continually, for ever and ever;

51 Godless men utterly deride me, but I do not turn away from thy law.

53 Hot indignation seizes me because of the wicked, who forsake thy law.

55 I remember thy name in the night, O LORD, and keep thy law.

61 Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget thy law.

70 their heart is gross like fat, but I delight in thy law.

72 The law of thy mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces.

77 Let thy mercy come to me, that I may live; for thy law is my delight.

85 Godless men have dug pitfalls for me, men who do not conform to thy law.

92 If thy law had not been my delight, I should have perished in my affliction.

97 Oh, how I love thy law! It is my meditation all the day.

109 I hold my life in my hand continually, but I do not forget thy law.

113 I hate double-minded men, but I love thy law.

126 It is time for the LORD to act, for thy law has been broken.

136 My eyes shed streams of tears, because men do not keep thy law.

142 Thy righteousness is righteous forever, and thy law is true.

150 They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose; they are far from thy law.

153 Look on my affliction and deliver me, for I do not forget thy law.

163 I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love thy law.

165 Great peace have those who love thy law; nothing can make them stumble.

174 I long for thy salvation, O LORD, and thy law is my delight.
